It’s tough to admit this to you.

We are in a season of overspending our income right now. *(sort of)

Things were great when I had the audio production gig and we were bringing home a combined monthly net income of between $5,000 – $6,000. Right after that job ended for me we had our baby, that cost a few thousand out of pocket. Then Carrie stayed home from work for 3 months and lost 2 paychecks after her maternity leave was up. Carrie has been back at work now for 2 months and things are actually looking better.

This should only last a few months until we are able to turn things around. We have enough in cash savings to weather the storm. (We have $5,000 in cash, enough to outspend our income by $500/mo for 10 months.) It should take us less than 4 months to turn this around.

One thing we might do right now is stop contributing to Carrie’s 401k at work for a few months. We are contributing 10% which is $212/paycheck. An extra $426/mo would allow us to break even while we are preparing to increase our income in other ways. We could also drop our student loan payment by $50/mo to the minimum payment. *(If we did this, we would no longer be “out-spending our paycheck”. See? See how magic works?)

The downside to doing this is we won’t be investing anything during that time. On the flip-side, if we can survive using the cash and continue to invest we wouldn’t miss out on the investments. We can easily build the cash back up to $5k but we would miss out on the lost investments forever. Only a few months of either of these choices won’t have drastic implications so I’m not sweatin’ it too much.
